Genealogy Genealogy is a study of family and identification of ancestors and their pertinent information about birth, death, etc. It is also known as family History, family search, ancestor search, family tree, lineage, personal ancestry , Redeeming the Dead etc, As Genealogy is the study and tracing of family pedigrees, it involves the collection of the names of relatives, both living and deceased, and establishing the relationships among them based on primary, secondary and/or circumstantial evidence or documentation, resulting in the building up of a family tree. It is a fascinating subject today for many all over the world . It is interesting for some one with a historical sense and family values, to trace the history of one's own family and try to understand the way of life, customs, and traditions of our ancestors . It will keep a person busy with his past generations and will give some satisfaction and fulfillment . The knowledge acquired through research as far as it goes can be passed on to our children and from them to the future generations |

About this website
This is not an attempt to write the history of Alummoottil family
Changanacherry . Compiling the history of Alummoottil family or any other family in Kerala in detail and
accurate is
extremely complex and complicated . Many of them who belongs to the old
generation is no more . History based on traditions customs folklore etc are
not
exact history but story . History should be based on written or unwritten
documents and other reliable evidence . Family history of many are often
based on traditions,
customs, folklore, imaginations etc . In that case the
history may miss the authenticity and may inherently contain the loopholes for
unreliable conclusions and opinions.
You may find the same limitations in
this attempt also if I make an attempt to write the history at this point of
time. That I may do it later when I get enough material .
Kindly note that in
my opinion the so called "Ancient Family" is a myth and most of the Syrian
catholic families could claim that so called "Ancient Traditions" and
"Ancient
family status" . . First of all let me state that as in most cases it is my
father who made me proud of my family traditions and inspired me for an
attempt to create
a family website . .My mother like any other mother ,more
than anybody else was concerned about "Good families" only when her children
were getting married
I was too young to understand all these when my father
was talking about family traditions etc
.I left my home town in Changanacherry when I was very young . However Prof.
A.. E. Augustine who was my professor in St. Berchmans' College and a member
of the
Alummoottil family once expressed his desire to convene the family
meeting and compile the list of members . He is no more. .There after in
recent times I happened to meet
Thankappan Retd. Deputy Collector of Kottayam
Collectorate and he told me about convening a meeting of members of
family . Unfortunately he is also no more ..Recently
when I visited Kerala my cousin
Philip (joy) expressed his opinion to call a meeting of the family and he
said he will first contact Rev Sr. Leonisa of Clarist Convent Erumely
who is
probably the one of the last link with the older generation
What I have presented here to a greater extent is something derived and
generated out of my limited contact with some family members and direct
search through internet .
My attempt to host this website is with the aim of
giving a chance to the members of the family to come together and exchange
their ideas This website is hosted with the hope
that this may enable the
future generations of this family, scattered around the world, to know each
other and to get inspired from the life of each one of them. Finally I owe my
special thanks to Rev Sr. Leonisa who holds a unique position in the family
and in the Clarist Convent Erumely and my thanks to J .Marattukalam for
technical support
Explanation about

of time. Any discrepancy or mistake is deeply regretted
but it will be
rectified as soon as it is pointed out .This incomplete list is published to
connect the present generation with the past .
The names appeared below is recorded from memory. Hence discrepancy is
inevitable This incomplete random list will be revised classified and
systematized
as and when I receive more information from reliable sources
The random list of family members are published with the aim of giving an

often unknown and living in distant and different places As

Christianity in Kerala
The history of most of
the Syrian Christian families in Kerala is linked to the early foundation of
Christianity. Any Christian family's history will be beginning in the
first
century AD, when St. Thomas
the apostle ,a
courageous and challenging personality brought Christianity to India shortly
after the death and resurrection of J
esus Christ. It is believed that St.
Thomas, landed in the coastal town of Musiris near Kodungaloor ,Kerala in the
year 52 AD . He baptized
certain Brahmin and
Jewish families in Kerala.For
nearly two decades he
did missionary work in Kerala
The Christian community is
not homogenous but belongs to different denominations . How ever most of the
Christians follow common customs and traditions
Kerala Christians trace their origins back to 52 AD when St. Thomas came to
a place near Kodungaloor and converted many local inhabitants including the
upper
casts known as Namboodiri Brahmins and Jews It is also
believed that St. Thomas preached the Gospel and established seven Churches in
different places in
Kerala ( Kodungallore, Palayur, Paravur, Kokkamangalam,
Niranam, Chayal, Korakkeni, Kollam) and a chapel (half church-"Arappalli") at
Thiruvankottu. .He is
believed to have been martyred at Mylapur, near
Madras,India, around 72 AD
The present Christian community especially the Syrian Christians of all
denominations believe that they descended from these small early Christian
communitis .
They are referred as Syrian Christians as they used Syrian
liturgy in church services . The Christians are also known as Nazarenes as
they are followers of Jesus
of Nazarene or St. Thomas Christians .
By the fourth century, there were barely 61 families left, if ancient verbal
songs. are a reliable source
This sad state of affairs is said to have come to an end in AD 345 , when
a prominent merchant by the name Knai Thoma came to Kerala in 345 AD with more
than 300 Syrian families and joined the then existing Syrian Christians in Kerala . They received respect and honor from the then king Cheraman Perumal.
It is
widely believed that by and large today's Kerala Christians are
descendants of the a aforementioned early Christians. However some among the
followers of
Knai Thoma maintained their separate identity and came to be
known as Knanites
The arrival of Portuguese by sea in 1498 created a new era in the history of
church in Kerala . They were eager to bring all churches under the
jurisdiction of
Rome and Bishop Alexis De Menzes succeeded in establishing the
Roman Catholic church as the dominant church in Kerala between 1500 to 1650 .
The Portuguese missionaries continued their proselyting activities and
attracted many local people in to Christianity . They tried to dominate the
Syrian Christian
church and it led to the Synod of Udayamperur
The Portuguese power began to decline by 17 th century resulting in the
weakness of Roman Catholic Church
The decline of the Portuguese led to the arrival of the Dutch and the
Carmelite missionaries began to arrive. During the ascendancy of the Dutch
there began
an on going struggle for local autonomy . In 1887 two diocese,Kottayam and Trichur were established with local autonomy. In 1896, 6
Bishops from among
Malayalis were appointed as Bishops for the first time
The Vicariate of Kottayam
was renamed Changanacherry in 1888 and its head quarters had been shifted to
Changancherry in 1891 Since this
town had been a centre of Catholics. . "New
Indigenous bishops were appointed Vicars Apostolic to the new Sees. They were
Mar Mathew Makil
for Changanacherry, Mar Louis Pazheparambil (from
Changanassery Vicariate) for Ernakulam and Mar John Menacherry for Thrissur".
.A new Vicariate of
Kottayam was constituted in1911 exclusively for the Suddists (Knananaya)and
Mar Mathew Makil was transferred to Kottayam
as the Vicar Apostolic of
Suddists and Mar Thomas Kurialacherry was appointed the Vicar Apostolic of
Changanacherry. With the establishment of
the Syro-Malabar Hierarchy on
December 21, 1923 by the Bull 'Romani Pontifices' of Pope Pius XI, the
Diocese of Thrissur, Changanassery and
Kottayam became suffragans of the
archdiocese of Ernakulam thereby constituting the first Syro-Malabar Province.
On July 25, 1950 the Diocese
of Changanacherry was bifurcated by the Bull 'Quo
Ecclesiarum' of Pope Pius XII and the new Diocese of Palai was created".
In 1955 boundaries of Changanacherry were extended to the areas south of
river Pamba, up to (including) Kanyakumari,by Pope Pius XII,
In 1956 Changanassery was raised to the status of an archdiocese by Pope
Pius XII constituting the second province in the Syro-Malabar Church
and Kottayam and Pala came under Changancherry archdiocese.
In 1956 ,Kothamangalam Tellicherri and Mananthawadi were established
. and in 1969
the Metropolitan of Eranakulam was elevated to Cardinal.
In 1977 The Archdiocese of Changnacherry was again divided by Pope Paul VI
and the new Diocese of Kanjirappilly was set up comprising parts
of the
districts of Kottayam, Idukki and Pathanamthitta.
In 1996 The Archdiocese was divided again and Kanyakumari mission was elevated
and the new Diocese of Thuckalay was inaugurated. Mar George
Alencherry was
appointed as its first Bishop
In 1975 the missionary work of three (now five) civil districts of the
Archdiocese of Agra in the State of U.P was brought completely under
Archdiocese of Changanasserry.
In 1956 ,Kothamangalam Tellicherri and Mananthawadi were established
. and in 1969
the Metropolitan of Eranakulam was elevated to Cardinal. For the Catholic
Church of Kerala the most momentous occasion was the beatification of a Kerala
priest and nun by Pope John Paul II. when he visited Kottayam and performed
it
The Christian population of Kerala
is approximately 22% as against 2.5% of the Indian average. Among the
innumerable Christian denominations in Kerala,
Catholics form the majority. The
Roman Catholics in Kerala who declare their allegiance to Pope may be
classified into four
1 Syrian Catholics 2 Latin Catholics 3 Malamkara 4 Syrian Knanaya Catholics
There are three rites among the Kerala Catholics, namely the Roman rite, and
the Oriental rites of Syro-Malabar and Syro-Malankara. The oriental rites are
commonly
called
"St. Thomas Christians"
as they are the descendants of those converted by St. Thomas, the Apostle when
he reached India in 52 AD. The followers of the
Syro-Malabar rite form the
majority of Catholics. The Syro-Malabar Church of Kerala is very active,
vigorous and growing, faithful to the doctrines of the Universal
Church, very rich in vocations and very traditional in family values. Syro-Malabar church is growing to outside Kerala and India. There are 21 eparchies for this church,
12 in Kerala and 9 outside Kerala. It has crossed the Atlantic ocean
and
reached united States and Canada
In
the Syro-Malabar church there is a small group called
" "Knanaya Catholics".
It is an ethnic group, and endogamous community which has its own distinct
customs and traditions . They are spread through out the world.
This 200,000+
strong community is under
the Bishop of Kottayam Diocese,
who enjoys personal jurisdiction over all Knanaya Catholics residing
throughout the world
.Many of them made migration to United States Even now
they are keen on preserving their culture and traditions
There are nearly 30 different Christian denominations in Kerala
including , Orthodox , Jacobite , Marthoma CSI, Chaleddeans,
the Pentecostals, Salvation Army
Yuyomayam DeivaSabha , Russel
church, Lutheran Mission.etc
Roman Catholics which include Latin and Syrian Catholics are 61.4 percent of
the Kerala Christians, Syrian Orthodox and Jacobite Syrians are 21.4 percent,
Marthomma Syrians 5.7 percent, Church of South India 5.2 percent, and others
who are members of various Evangelical churches 6.3 percent..
Kerala Christians are a prosperous community and their per
capita income is higher compare to other religious groups in Kerala .
The Syrian Christian community of Kerala constitute one of the most ancient
Christian communities of the world
They possess commanding influence in the political, social and economical
field in Kerala
Christianity in
India
India is the second most populous nation in the world .However the most
populous religion in the world is a "microscopic minority" in most
part of this country.
According to the 2001 census the total number of Christians in India was 24.08
million (2.40 Crores )that is 2.3 percent of India's population . Among the
total
population of Christians 7o % were Roman Catholics including 300 000
members of Syro Malakara and 3.5 million (35Lakh)of syro Malabar church
In January 1993 the Syro-Malabar Church and in February 2005 Syro-Malankara
Church were raised to the status of
major archiepiscopal churches
by
Pope
ohn Paul II.
The largest non Catholic -Protestant -denomination in India is the
Church of South India.
CSI came into existence in 1947 as a result of a union of
Presbyterian,
Reformed,
Congregational,
Methodist, and
Anglican congregations
with approximately 2.2 million (22 lakh) members
as of 1995.
Church of North India
similar to CSI had 1 million (10 lakh) members. (These churches are in
full communion with the
Anglican Communion.)
"There were about
1.3 million (13 lakh)
Lutherans, 473,000
Methodists, and 425,000
Baptists
as of 1995.
Oriental Orthodox
churches of the Malankara and Malabar rites totaled
2 million (20 lakh) and
700,000 members, respectively. Various groups of
Pentecostalism,
Protest denomination,
is also a growing religion in India. It is spreading
fast in northern India
and the southwest area, such as
Kerala. "The largest

India Pentecostal Church of God
(IPC).
Another prominent protestant group is the Brethrens.. There are
different groups such as

Mizos,
Nagas,
and other hill tribes.
Today Christians are most prevalent in the northeast
(secessionist movements in a few states such as
Nagaland
are demanding an independent Christian-majority
entity.But they are slowly
assimilating to world's most populous democrcy), and in the southwestern
states of Kerala and
Goa. Indian
Christians have contributed
significantly to and are well represented in
various spheres of national life. Christians are chief ministers of the states
like
Andhra Pradesh,
Nagaland,
Mizoram,
Manipur,
Meghalaya
and were chief ministers earlier of
Kerala,
Goa and
Chattisgarh.
In the the ruling
Indian National Congress
there are many Christian leaders
who are occupying important positons .at the
national level.
Changanacherry
The history of Changanachery could be traced to as far as AD 90 . It is
believed that the name Changanacherry is derived from its market once one of
the biggest
in Kerala. This was the market which later became the confluence of
traders and merchants of Kuttanad and High Range . "Changazhi" Nazhi and Uzhi
were the the
measurement used in those days . The name Changanacherry might
have originated from these measuring containers .
Some people believe that this name is derived from Changanattusserry
It is believed that during the reign of Maharaja Udaya Matrthanda Varma of
Travancore, steps were taken to build a catholic church by giving out plots
for sowing

in Kerala ). In 980 Velluthampy Dalava then Divan of Travancore founded a
market place in
Changanacherry

interesting story is that the name is originated from three separate words
Shang natham sherri. It is believed that then Raja of Changanacherry ordered
for

palace so that he would wake up in the morning to the call of the conch shell
(Shang from

ORIGINAL Extract from Chirayail family website The following extract is from the history of chirayil family Website
"In 52 A.D. St Thomas, the Apostle of Christ came to Kerala, preached Christianity at Kodungaloor, Palayoor and other places, and baptized certain
Brahmin (priest class) families there. Those Brahmins converted to Christianity retained their traditions and customs through generations. The present
generation of the Plammoottil family is the descendants of one of the families converted to Christianity by St. Thomas. In the earlier centuries, Palayoor (Northern Kerala) was a center of Christian activity. During the invasion of Tippu Sultan, the Christians fled to the south and settled mostly at Kuravilangad, north of Ettumanoor. After settling down at Kuravilangad they took the lead in the construction of the famous Kuravilangad
Church and many members of those families became priests. Some of these people moved further south and settled at places like Ettumanoor, Athirampuzha,
Palai, Ramapuram, Kottayam, Kudamaloor, Mannanam, Kumarakom, Changanacherry, Mallappally, Kallooppara, Thiruvalla, Chengannoor, Mavelikara, etc.
It is believed that the Christians now living at the above said places are the descendants of the Christians who have settled at Kuravilangad. This is evidenced
by the fact that some of those families are still using the old family names, which they have used at Palayoor and later at Kuravilangad. The then prevailing religious customs and traditions also have paved way for the transplanting of Christian families from Kuravilangad to the above mentioned
places, where prominent Hindu temples were situated. It was a custom and belief that the temple supplies brought in could be used for the temple rituals only
if it is ‘purified’ by the Brahmin converted Christians touching it. So it became a necessity to have a Christian family available for such services. Such families enjoyed special rights and privileges from the temple and were entitled to tax free land. These privileges were in effect till the mid nineteen forties. These can
be verified with the temple records of Ettumanoor".
The opinion expressed here is entirly from a member of Chirayil family

The Month Poem:
Thirty days hath September,
April, June, and November;
February has twenty-eight alone,
All the rest have thirty-one,
Excepting leap-year, that's the time
When February's days are twenty-nine.
